Concept of Group Discussion

The concept of Group Discussion is not a part of regular academic curriculum in Colleges and Universities. So, students face a lot of problem in this group discussion Process. Most  of the institutions are clear about the skills and knowledge to look for a student while screening. This was the procedure at some years ago. Group Discussion has been a part of the Selection process for admission into most of the top Educational institutions.

Group Discussions are used to assess some group skills that cannot be appeared in an interview. These include reasoning ability, leadership, flexibility, creativity, social skills, listening and articulation skills, situational handling capacity, Team player, body language and attitude



Most of the institutes use Group Discussions as the second step in the selection process after written exam. This is the reason why Group Discussion has become so very important process for selection and rejection of candidates in institutes and campus placements.
At the time of group discussion, the group of candidates taken a topic or a situation,and given a few minutes to think about that topic, and then asked to discuss it among themselves for some time. It could be a topic on current events, business news, sports news or general situations. 



Here are some tips for effective participation in a Group Discussion:

  • Understand the topic
  • Try and get a chance to speak.
  • Take the initiative to begin the discussion, if possible.
  • justify your feelings
  • Summaries the discussion effectively
  • Take active part throughout the Group Discussion.
  • Be clear in your speech.
  • Be an effective listener.
